Our daily lives now involve almost continuous interactions with technologies via their interfaces. Artificial intelligence is changing the way we interact with some technologies: AI lets us talk to our devices naturally, using everyday language and gestures. However, not all interfaces are AI, and just having AI embedded does not ensure productivity, simplicity, and enjoyment for all use cases. Thus, user experience (UX) design is important to ensure our increasingly technology-enabled lives are productive, efficient, and enjoyable. In this presentation, experienced UX designer Erik Summa will share how UX continues to play an important role in making technologies useful and enjoyable, and especially how AI is changing UX and the way we design technologies for the maximum benefit of humans.

Erik Summa is an AI Experience Leader at Dell Technologies who specializes in designing intuitive human-AI interactions through natural interfaces. With 15+ years in the creative industry and over five years mentoring future designers, he transforms complex AI capabilities into seamless, human-centered experiences.

Behind every AI lies elegant mathematics. These systems don't truly "think" - they calculate from patterns learned from vast amounts of data. When AI produces incorrect information (hallucinations), it's not deliberately misleading you – it's making a statistical guess based on its training.
Tom will explain why hallucinations occur using clear examples:
- How AI generates text by predicting the next most likely word
- Why asking the same question twice can produce different answers
- The "lottery selection" process that introduces unpredictability
He'll also have visual aids to help explain these concepts in an accessible way.
Understanding this helps you use AI more effectively by crafting clearer questions and knowing when to verify information.
So, the next time you chat with an AI, remember you're engaging with a powerful mathematical system, restricted by its training data.
